What is My Number?

 

My Number is a 12-digit ID given to everyone living in Japan with a residence certificate. 

 

It is used for things like taxes, social security, and disaster support. 

 

With My Number, the government can confirm your identity quickly and share information between offices.

Types of My Number Documents

 

 

 

1. My Number Card (マイナンバーカード)

 

 

 

· Plastic IC card with your photo and personal information on the front, My Number on the back.

 

· Useful for long-term use and online procedures.

 

 

 

2. Residence Certificate (住民票) with My Number (住民票の写し)

 

 

 

· Paper document, can be issued the same day at your city hall.

 

· Commonly used for bank account opening, company paperwork.

 

 

 

3. Notification Card 

 

 

 

· Sent to your address about 2–3 weeks after you register your residence.

 

· Important: Since May 25, 2020, Notification Cards have been replaced by Individual Number Notices. These cannot be used as official proof of your My Number.

 

If you only have an Individual Number Notice, please apply for a Residence Certificate or a My Number Card instead.

 

 

 

 

 

How to Apply for a My Number Card?

 

 

1. Online Application

 

Apply via the official website: https://www.kojinbango-card.go.jp/en/

 

 

2. Photo Booth Application

 

Take the application form to a supported photo booth. Take your picture and apply directly from the machine. (Note: Not all photo booths support this service.)

 

 

3. By Mail

 

Paste your photo on the application form, put it into the return envelope, and drop it in the mailbox.

 

The document is usually issued within a month.

 

 

 

How to Apply for a Residence Certificate with My Number?

 

 

1. Go to the nearby city hall with your Residence Card.

 

 

2. Tell the staff: 「個人番号付きの住民票が必要です」 (“I need a Residence Certificate with My Number”).

 

You will get a request form to fill out. A template will be available here, so it will be easy.

 

Important: Make sure to tick the box for My Number, otherwise it will not appear on the certificate.

 

 

3. The document is usually issued within a few minutes.
